Community Service Project Optimizing The Energy Conversion Potential of Biodegradable Waste at The Mulyoagung TPST 3R
Developed and field-tested a biodigester for converting biodegradable waste into alternative energy through an interdisciplinary community service project at Mulyoagung TPST 3R.
Participated in a long-term interdisciplinary community service project at Mulyoagung TPST 3R, Malang, focusing on optimizing the energy conversion potential of biodegradable waste through anaerobic digestion and biogas production. The project was conducted as a collaboration between lecturers and students from multiple disciplines, combining technical knowledge with direct community-based implementation.
As part of the team, I was involved in the development, preparation, and field testing of a biodigester system designed to utilize biodegradable waste available at the TPST. The project involved working directly with locally generated organic waste, including preparing and size-reducing the waste before it was used as biodigester feedstock. The team then conducted trials and evaluated the implementation of the system under actual field conditions.

The project followed a hands-on approach, beginning with preparation and small-scale testing before the technology was implemented at the TPST. At the field site, I participated in the practical implementation and trial activities alongside students from different academic backgrounds. The collaboration allowed the team to integrate different areas of expertise in developing a practical waste-to-energy solution. This interdisciplinary approach is also reflected in the broader Polinema program, which involved students from Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Informatics Engineering, and Accounting.
The experience strengthened my understanding of waste-to-energy processes, biodigester operation, feedstock preparation, experimental work, and field implementation. It also developed my ability to work collaboratively across disciplines, identify practical challenges in real operating environments, and adapt engineering concepts to community needs.
Beyond the technical aspects, the project provided an opportunity to contribute directly to sustainable waste management and renewable energy utilization. The initiative aimed to shift the perspective of biodegradable waste from a disposal problem toward a potential resource for energy generation, while supporting the development of more sustainable waste-management practices at the community level.
